The Acera School is a private K-8 school in Winchester, MA, roughly 10 miles north of Boston. We believe scientific awareness and knowledge are a core part of being literate in the 21st-century world. Major curriculum-wide blocks are built around scientific themes and ideas. Acera students discover and create, and topics are applied to a broader world context.
The Acera Science blog is meant to be a resource for all interested in integrating more inquiry and higher order thinking skills in their science classroom. We believe in approaching science from a practical real world approach in which students are tasked with an open ended problem that they will devise a strategy to solve and draw conclusions from. The skills garnered include experimental design and optimization and drawing conclusions from their own results. This approach is comparable to those a science would experience while working in a lab. However, the skills gained are transferrable to a number of different disciplines all by teaching scientific thought.
